MALAKI ang problema kay Rodrigo Duterte. Hanggang ngayon, lihis ang isip. Hindi niya ganap na nauunawaan ang pandemya. Sa pagharap niya sa publiko noong Lunes ng gabi, sinabi ng tila bangag na lider ng bansa: “Do not despair. Kaya natin ito. Ito’ng Covic-19. Maliit na bagay lang ito. Madami tayong nadaanan. Huwag kayong matakot, hindi ko kayo iwanan.”
Maliit na bagay? Paano naging maliit na bagay kung bumagsak ang pambansa ekonomiya at Filipina ay isa sa may pinakamababang paglago saGDP na umabot sa -9.5% noong 2020? Hindi lumago ang bansa at marami ang nawalan ng hanapbuhay – mahigit 5 milyon. Mahigit 600,000 ang tinamaan ng sakit at 12,000 ang namatay, at walang nakikitang solusyon sa hinaharap.
Habang abala ang ibang bansa sa pagbakuna sa kanilang mamamayan at pilit nilang pinabibilis ang bakuna upang makabalik sa normal, hindi kumikilos ang gobyerno ni Duterte dahil hanggang ngayon hindi nila alam kung ano ang gagawin.
Pawang lihis ang kanilang mga isip dahil pagkatapos ng mahigit isang taon na pandemya, wala pa rin silang plano at programa ng pagkilos, walang estratehiya at target sa hinaharap, at walang malinaw na direksyon na tinatahak. Walang mass testing, walang contact tracing, at walang pambansang programa para sa bakuna.
Sistemang bara-bara. Bahala na si Batman at isama mo pa si Superman at Wonder Woman. Hindi sila kinakikitaan ng galing dahil wala silang totoong gilas at galing. Walang nag-iisip ng maayos at malinis sa bayan. Pawang mga lihis ang isip.
Matapos ang isang taon ng pandemya at nasadlak sa bansa sa dusa, hindi nila naiintindihan ang totoong nangyari. Maliit na bagay? Loko-loko ka. Hindi mo kami iiwanan? Mas maganda ang umalis ka na. Hayaan ang iba na mamuno.

NAGULAT kami sa balita na positibo sa Covid-19 si Debold Dinas at Herminio Roque (iyan ang totoo niyang pangalan). Mas nagulat kami sa mabangis na sagot ng maraming netizen. Marami ang natutuwa, nagbubunyi, at nagsabing ng hindi maganda sa kanila. Karma – iyan daw ang dumating sa kanila. “Mabuti nga sa kanila,” anila.
Hindi makalimutan ng maraming netizen ang sagot ni Roque na “excellent”ang pangangasiwa ng amo niyang si Duterte sa pandemya. Hindi malinaw sa kanila kung paano naging excellent. Basag ang pula ni Roque. Walang naniniwala sa kanya kundi ang kapuwa niya na basag ang pula. Pinagtatawanan si Roque sa gitna ng kanyang pagkakasakit umano.

MAS nakakagulat ang panukala ni Francisco Duque III noong Lunes. Pag-ibayuhin ang contact tracing. Por Diyos, por santo, pagkatapos ng mahigit isang taon na pandemya, naisip ni Duque ang contact tracing. Hindi namin alam batid kung ano ang context ng kanyang pahayag, ngunit hindi kami magtaka kung paghinalaan na nasisiraan siya ng bait.
Habang pinag-iibayo ng ibang bansa ang kani-kanilang programa sa bakuna at nag-uunahan, narito ang kalihim sa kalusugan na hindi alam kung ano ang gagawin at totoong nagpag-iwanan ng panahon. Kawawa naman si Duque. Tanga pa rin.

Top pro-democracy groups and personalities have formed a coalition that would select national candidates for a single, united democratic slate in the 2022 elections. Galvanizing the erstwhile fragmented democratic forces in the country, the nascent 1Sambayan national coalition aims to restore good governance – an alien concept in the Duterte administration.
Former Supreme Court Justice Antonio Carpio, former Ombudsman and Supreme Court Justice Conchita Carpio Morales, former Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario, former Education Secretary Bro. Armin Luistro, and anti-corruption activist Albert “Paring Bert” Alejo are among the personalities who convened the coalition representing the democratic forces spanning the Philippine political spectrum – from Bayan Muna on one end, to the Magdalo Group on the other end.
Together, these democratic forces and their followers constitute a majority of voters that can secure a victory in the national elections on May 9, 2022. 1Sambayan’s convenors point out that Rodrigo Duterte won the presidency in 2016 by a mere plurality, not a majority, of votes.
Counting the voters who did not fall for Duterte’s populist and authoritarian promises, the convenors believe he would have lost the election if there were fewer other candidates who campaigned on more democratic, realistic, and reasonable platforms.
1Sambayan aims to select a single slate of national candidates – president, vice president, 12 senators – to represent the democratic forces in May 2022. Political parties and groups among the democratic forces have pledged their support to 1Sambayan, and have agreed to abide by its selection of candidates.
The Philippines in 2022 cannot risk falling under another administration similar to Duterte’s, whose failed response to the COVID-19 pandemic, along with its unsound policies on major political, security, and economic matters have set the Philippines back, causing it to relapse into the “Sick Man of Asia.”
The democratic forces must then rally in order to block a victory by Duterte’s heir, whomever it will be. A brand new, competent leadership with integrity must take over when Duterte steps down next year. “We have a lot of good people but they are not in leadership positions. Their talent, their patriotism – they’re all wasted because they are not in leadership positions. What we have to do is to put the right people there,” said Carpio.
The 1Sambayan national coalition will officially introduce its convenors and members in a media event at the Makati Sports Club on Thursday, March 18, at 10 a.m. At the event, the convenors will discuss their plans on the selection of candidates for the democratic forces.
