WISH nina GM Rogelio Antonio, Jr. and team owner-manager Leo Sotaridona ng Iloilo Kisela ang mamayagpag pa ang popularidad ng chess sa bansa sa pagkatatag ng Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP).
Tanging chess ang di natengga kahit sa panahon ng worldwide lockdown sa sports dahil sa pandemic, napokus ang tao sa naturang sport dahil sa pagiging- contact competition nito.
Chess is always one of the more popular sports among the Filipinos. And now with the coronavirus pandemic keeping all of us at home, there is a clamor to play chess online,” saad ni Antonio sa nakaraang “Usapang Sports on Air” ng Tabloids Organization in Philippine Sports via Zoom .
“Filipino chessers can be just as good in online chess as in over-the-board games.Magagaling naman tayong mga Pilipino kahit sa online chess. Although it is a lot different than face-to-face chess, we have adjusted well enough to stay competitive,” ani pa Antonio sa weekly public service program na iniisponsoran ng the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) at Games and Amusements Board (GAB).
Ayon sa ikatlong GrandMaster ng bansa kasunod kina GM Eugene Torre at(late) GM Rosendo Balinas:
PCAP, which started only last Jan. 16, is very timely since it gives players fron Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao the opportunity to play chess during this pandemic,”
Ayon naman kay Sotaridona, kasama ni Antonio sa weekly session, itinatag ang Iloilo Knights upang ma- promote ang chess at mga manlalaro .
“We did not think twice when the opportunity to form a team from Iloilo came. My friends and I really want to help our chess players,” ani Sotaridona, na kasalukuyang nakabase sa Washington, United States.
“Right now, the Knights are among the leading teams with 9-2 win-loss record in the Southern Conference behind only Negros Kingsmen (10-1) and Camarines Eagles (10-1),”
The goal is to make it to the quarterfinals. If we make it, we’ll go for the Southern Conference title,”wika ni Sotaridona. (Danny Simon)
