PANAHON ngayon ng gantihan sa pulitika. Tinarakan ng punyal sa likod, sinunog at iniwan sa ere. Sumakabilang bakod kahit sa init ng bakbakan. Walang permanenteng kaibigan at ang personal na interes ang nangingibabaw sa mga desisyon sa pulitika. Ito ang pulitika sa Filipinas lalo na sa panahon ng kampanya.

May mga desisyon na balot din sa prinsipyo, ayon sa ilang pulitiko. May mga local official na sumama sa tambalang Leni-Kiko sapagkat kinakatawan nila ang matinong bahagi ng pulitika ng bansa. Hindi nila masikmura ang BBM-Sara tandem kahit nangunguna sa ilang survey na hindi malaman kung paano tinapos. Alam nila na dadalhin ng BBM-Sara ang bansa sa kapahamakan. Dapat na mapigil ito, anila.

Kinilala ni Bebot Alvarez ang mga kontribusyon ni Ping Lacson bilang mambabatas at opisyal ng gobyerno. Ngunit iniwanan ni Bebot si Ping dahil may may malaking pag-asa na manalo si Leni kesa kay Ping na hindi umangat ang kandidatura sa buong panahon ng kampanya. Dalawang kandidato na lamang ang mahigpit na naglalaban sa panguluhan, ayon kay Bebot. Sa pakiwari ng mga lider ng Partido Reporma, mas maiging suportahan si Leni. Anila sa isang pahayag:

“Right now, two candidates have pulled away from the pack, and while the candidate second in ranking still lags far behind from the frontrunner, it is evident that her campaign has gained, and continues to gain, significant traction. There is much potential there. She has also shown that she represents ideals which are substantially in line with the aims of Partido Reporma: to reform government and provide a better future for Filipinos.”

Bagaman may katwiran si Bebot Alvarez at Partido Reporma, hindi maalis sa aming isip na bahagi ng gantihan ang nangyayari. Si Sara Duterte ang nagmaniobra para maaalis si Bebot Alvarez bilang ispiker ng Kamara de Representante sa pagtatapos ng 2018 at palitan siya ni GMA. Tiniis ni Bebot ang kataksilan ni Sara at bayad atraso lamang siya ngayon.

Hindi lang lumundag si Bebot Alvarez sa karwahe ni Leni kundi sinaksak pa nya ng harap-harapan si Ping Lacson.

Lupaypay na si Ping. Hindi na niya malulutas pa si Leni. Buong organisasyon ng Partido Reporma dinala ni Alvarez papunta kay Leni. Wala nang natira kay Ping, maging ang dugo at kaluluwa nito.

Well, “you are entitled to your own stupidity”, sabi ni Alvarez nuon kay Gary Alejano sa kasagsagan ng impeachment complaint laban kay Dutz. Nagkatotoo nga ang sinabi nya. Pero sa ngayun tinutukoy nya ang kanyang sarili.

Traidor si Alvarez sa mata ng mga supporters ni Ping, pero ika nga, “you are entitled to your own stupidity.”

One’s loss is somebody’s gain. Malaking booster para sa kampanya ni Leni ang mga pangyayaring ito. Hayaan na lang yan sa ngayun.

Leni will deal with Alvarez pagkatapos ng eleksyon.

It’s payback time for former Duterte allies

Rep. Pantaleon Alvarez of Davao, former Speaker of the House, has endorsed Leni Robredo for president. He is mum about his preference for vice president, but that definitely is not Sara Duterte.

He was the closest person to Rodrigo Duterte, so close that he even endorsed the extrajudicial killings for which he’s been charged with crimes against humanity before the International Criminal Court in The Hague.

The Davao congressman is still smarting over his unceremonious removal as Speaker of the House, courtesy of Ms. Duterte, in favor of Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

Ironically, the president’s daughter did not advance the family’s political fortune by getting Mrs. Macapagal-Arroyo to take over the Speakership. The former president had already been so obsequious to Mr. Duterte that the move was absolutely unnecessary.

Before Mr. Alvarez, Alan Peter Cayetano suffered the same fate. He too was booted out of the Speakership on a whim.

There was also no cogent reason why Mr. Duterte should replace Koko Pimentel with Tito Sotto as Senate president, but that’s exactly what he did. And to think that Mr. Pimentel had allowed PDP-Laban, the party his father founded, to be the vehicle for Mr. Duterte’s ascent to power.

Not very happy with the turn of events, Mr. Pimentel is casting his lot with Manny Pacquiao and Lito Atienza, who is running against Ms. Duterte. Is Mr. Sotto grateful for his turn at the switch?

Nah, he too is contesting the vice presidency.

It is believed that Mr. Pacquiao and Mr. Alvarez will draw away votes from Ms. Duterte and her principal, Ferdinand Marcos Jr., in Mindanao, the Duterte family’s supposed bailiwick.

Mr. Duterte is the classic example of a bungling idiot, as head of the government or the don of a criminal organization. He confuses one with the other too, not knowing when his duty as mayor or president ends and his role as capo di tutti cappi begins.

That applies to Ms. Duterte as well. She is a third-rate lawyer and a corrupt, incompetent mayor, a post she has inherited from her father.

No friendship is to be despised, a dictum that the Godfather has taken to heart. But father and daughter managed to alienate their most loyal political supporters, not to mention the whole country.

Now it’s payback time for Mr. Alvarez, Mr. Pimentel, Mr. Sotto, and Mr. Cayetano.
